Moyross monks to play match in aid of suicide awareness

The Limerick City based Moyross monks will take on a team of Munster All-stars in a charity football match been planned for later this year.

The monks made the front pages of the national newspapers in May 2010 when a team including members of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal took on and beat a team of local community Gardaí by five goals to three.

Event organiser Jamie Daly, who is a soccer manager with Moyross United in Limerick city, has revealed plans to put together a team of local sports stars to put the Moyross monks to the test this May in a charity match, this time in aid of Suicide Awareness.

The previous event was held in aid of Cancer Research and Special Olympics Ireland.

Daly said that, while negotiations with players are ongoing, people should expect an all-star line-up.

“A team of rugby, GAA, and soccer players will be assembled together to take on the monks.”

However the monks themselves will have some ex-premiership soccer players in their ranks and it is expected that Limerick born striker Bobby Ryan, who played his professional football with Dunfermline in the Scottish Premier League, will be available and it is hoped that Munster and Ireland rugby centre Keith Earls, who is also a native of Moyross, will be available to play if he is not committed to another fixture on the day.

Up to six monks will play in the match and they are likely to be captained again by Fr Paulus who captained them on the previous occasion.

According to Daly, “The event is going to be massive and will hopefully raise thousands of euro for the much needed Suicide Awareness campaign in Limerick City.”

The match will take place on Sunday May 13 at 3:00pm.
