Palestinian Leader To Visit Pope

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with Pope Benedict XVI in a private audience on Tuesday, April 24.

The Palestinian leader, who last met with the Pontiff in December 2005, is expected to speak with the Pope about the prospects for resumption of the peace process.

Abbas will be traveling in Europe in an effort to generate diplomatic support for the new Palestinian government, which replaced a Hamas-dominated regime that had been shunned by the Western world.

He will meet with Italian government leaders after his visit to the Vatican.
