The Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley, announced that Fr David Oakley, 57, has been named for the role.

Fr Oakley, the parish priest of Our Lady of the Assumption, Maryvale, who has worked at the college as procurator and pastoral director, is taking over from Mgr Mark Crisp, who has been rector since 2001 and is going on sabbatical.

Fr Oakley will take up his appointment on 24 February.

Since Ushaw College, in County Durham, closed as a seminary Oscott now trains a number of seminarians for northern dioceses.

There are currently 54 students, 10 of whom are for the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

The college also trains seminarians outside of England and Wales.
