Church of Ireland boom

Cork has the most Church of Ireland members in the country while the Catholic population across Ireland has reached its lowest point. 

According to a report entitled Religion, Ethnicity and Irish Travellers – Ethnic and Cultural Background in Ireland released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) yesterday, Thursday there are 12,108 Church of Ireland members in Cork, the highest of any county, accounting for 9.4% of all the religion’s members. 

The number of people who describe themselves as Catholic now stands at 3.86m, representing 84% of the total population, the lowest since records began. Cork city reported the seventh lowest record of Catholics, at around 83%.

Orthodox Christians in Cork County stood at 4% of the population, while almost 8% of the Cork population stated that they had no religion. 

In Cork County, the Muslim community stood at 4.6%.
