Plaque to honour island babies

A plaque is to be dedicated on a tiny West Cork island in memory of its people and especially to children that died before baptism.
Bishop of Cork and Ross John Buckley braved the elements and joined up to 150 people associated with Heir Island for an annual Mass at Gort na Cille burial ground.

A plaque is being crafted to celebrate the planned 10th anniversary of the island Mass next year.

The burial plot is situated on ‘Barry’s Land’ on Heir Island Middle.

The site was commonly used for stillbirths and children that died before baptism.

Many island families have connections to the rocky plot as a result.

People this week travelled from all over the West Cork region to remember loved ones laid to rest at the cillín.

"No one knows how many people are interred there," islander and organising committee member Michael Harte said.

Currently, a wooden cross crafted by carpenter George Harte marks the cillín.

The annual Mass serves as spiritual comfort to those with connections to the cillín but also as a gathering for the scattered island diaspora.

Michael Harte said: "It’s a great opportunity for those with links to Heir Island to meet up, many of them don’t see each other too often — mostly at weddings or funerals."
