London mayor backs gay marriage

The Conservative mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has given his whole-hearted support for the legalisation of marriage between same-sex couples.

In a video released on YouTube last Monday for the Out4Marriage campaign, Mr Johnson said he could "see absolutely no reason" why gay couples should not be allowed to marry rather than have civil partnerships.

A new cross-party and cross-media campaign, Out4Marriage is aiming to promote a range of prominent figures to push for the legalisation of gay marriage.

In the video Mr Johnson says: "I see absolutely no reason why that happy state [marriage] should be denied to anybody in our country and that's why I'm supporting the Out4Marriage campaign."

Previously Mr Johnson has been critical of gay marriage.
