Humanists back work-free Sundays

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/thumb/1/17/Humanistischer_Verband.svg/200px-Humanistischer_Verband.svg.pngGerman humanists have added their voices to the broad alliance in Germany dedicated to the protection of Sundays as a day of rest.

The German humanist association (HVD) has joined the Alliance for a work-free Sunday ("Allianz für den freien Sonntag"), that was set up by the Churches and is strongly supported by the trade unions.

"Promoting social and family solidarity is in our view a deeply humanist concern," HVD president Frieder Otto Wolf said last week.

Since 1919 Germany has had Sunday rest enshrined in its basic law as a day of rest and "spiritual elevation".

However, many of the 16 states have already made some exceptions, allowing stores to open on a few Sundays in the year.
