Call to declare foeticide murder

The Church in India has hailed the growing demand for pressing murder charges against those who aid and abet female foeticide.

The crime is deep-rooted in India, which has only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys.

A 14 July convention held in the village of Bibipur in Haryana state was attended by leaders of more than 300 villages in three northern states where the crime is widespread.

These states - Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh - all have a ratio of between 800 and 900 girls for every 1,000 boys, and the village leaders called for murder charges against those who indulge in the "heinous act".

"This is certainly a very positive development in the fight against female foeticide," Holy Spirit congregation Sr Helen Saldanha, secretary of the women's desk of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, said on Tuesday.
