Poison pen letter writer’s treasure trove discovered

The charges against Paolo Gabriele, Benedict XVI’s butler are becoming more and more specific and serious.

According to sources inside the Vatican, a staggering number of documents were found in the butler’s apartment; whole “crates” of documents were found, including all the equipment needed for photographing and reproducing documents.

The scenario investigators are therefore faced with is not one of someone performing intermittent and sporadic operations, rich though these may be, but a full fledged plan which involved photographing, reproducing and filing confidential documents that made their way onto Benedict XVI’s desk.

According to investigators, the discovery of this sophisticated professional photography equipment, also explains how such a large mass of letters was accumulated; although the material found is still being analysed, were a comparison to be made between these documents and the ones published in Italian journalist Nuzzi’s recent book, there would be a match.

It is not clear yet what led the Pope’s butler to commit a breach of duty; it is uncertain whether the motive behind this violation was financial or something else.

Above all, it is not clear whether others instigated the leak and who these instigators or accomplices could be.
