Diarmuid Martin defends €11.8m Eucharistic Congress cost

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has defended the cost of staging the Eucharistic Congress in Ireland.

He said the bishops had been very careful to ensure spending was controlled.

Diarmuid Martin said that even though the Congress was costing €11.8m to organise, bringing so many international pilgrims and guests into this country for the Congress would give a boost to the economy.

Church goers have already contributed almost 25% of the overall cost of the Congress by way of church collections.

Over 80,000 people attending mass at Croke Park at the Congress will pay €10 per ticket and those attending events at the RDS will be asked to pay €35 each.

The Archbishop of Dublin said the occasion would present the Catholic Church in Ireland with an opportunity to show its strength and would not be a reflection on what happened in 1932.

Archbishop Martin emphasised that Congress was not just a Dublin based event, but thousands of people would be attending at churches throughout the country.

He said he was also prepared to talk to the organisers of a petition collected by survivors of clerical abuse from Donegal, who had asked to present their petition before the Congress.
