Call for Theology of the Body in RE

Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body" should be taught in Catholic schools, according to new guidance from the Bishops of England and Wales.

The "Religious Education Curriculum Directory (3-19)" is described as a statement by the bishops concerning the "aims and content" of RE in Catholic schools.

"Much has changed in Catholic schools and the society they serve," Fr Tim Gardner OP, RE adviser to the Catholic Education Service (CES), said: "The directory has now been revised and updated to take account of a changing situation."

While the Theology of the Body was a profound reflection on the Christian understanding of marriage and sex, it is clear that the use by couples of artificial contraception was deemed morally wrong.
