Tram shifts for Pope

TRANSPORT bosses have agreed to move the tram on Princes Street ahead of the Pope's visit, but only by a few hundred yards.

The £2 million vehicle is to be shifted to the west end of the street on the day of the visit and will be moved back afterwards.

Tram firm TIE said the move was a "mutual decision" after discussions with the Catholic Church.

The Evening News revealed on Wednesday that tram bosses were under pressure to move the vehicle amid worries that it would restrict views of the Popemobile.

Councillor Gordon Mackenzie, the city's transport convener, said: "The decision has always been about where to move it and not whether or not to move it."
