Ranjith installed in Colombo

Pledging to back Sri Lanka government efforts to bring peace to the nation, new Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith was installed Thursday.

Archbishop Ranjith yesterday pledged his support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Government to bring peace to the nation, the Daily Mirror reports.

“Let me pledge the support of the Church to the Government and the President in their effort to bring peace to the nation as we have done so for the last 30 years,” the Archbishop said just after his installation at St Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena yesterday.

The Archbishop also said he looks forward to work closely with the Buddhist clergy for the betterment of the nation.

He said he had taken over the Archdiocese of Colombo at a difficult and challenging time and therefore called on the other bishops and the priests to be united. “Let us not allow weak human nature create divisions among us,” he said

“I have closely experienced the unconditional love of God throughout my life. It has directed me on the correct path when I was at a cross roads in my life. God guided me in my destiny,” he said according to the Daily News.

Archbishop Ranjith also appealed to the young generation not to follow the trend of neglecting spiritual development.

“I hope I have the blessings of the Lord to treat you as brothers and correct you and put you on the right track when you go astray,” he told the priests.

However he said he would mostly rely on the unconditional faith the ordinary people have on him.

He appealed to all to show kindness and love to those who are suffering from trauma and anguish. “Always try to help each other the way God taught you”, he added.
