Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien to Represent Pope in Derry

The Holy Father has nominated Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland to be his special representative for celebrations marking the centenary of the foundation of the Long Tower church in the city of Derry, Ireland.

The event will take place on the 9th June 2009, the feast day of St Columba.

The church stands on a site of worship which dates back as far as the 12th century.

To celebrate 100 years of the present building the parish clergy has set aside the 9th day of each month from 9th June 2008 until 9th June 2009 to finish many renovations and repairs to the church.
