Martin regrets absence of Dublin Airport crib

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin has described as ‘‘unfortunate’’ Dublin Airport’s failure to provide a Christmas crib.

Passengers using the airport can see plastic reindeer and a snowman, but - for the first time ever - the traditional Christmas crib is not on show.

A spokeswoman at the airport information desk said: ‘‘The crib was here last year, but we don’t have one this year. We have Santa Claus going around the airport though.”

A Dublin Airport Authority spokesman said: ‘‘When we went to erect the crib in its usual location on the arrivals road near the pay machines for the car park a few weeks ago, it was noticed that it had been damaged in storage during the year. It was not possible to repair the damage in time for this Christmas season, but the crib will resume its usual place for Christmas 2009.”

Archbishop Martin said it was ‘‘unfortunate that there appears to have been a difficulty in getting a crib in place in the airport’’.

Fr Des Doyle, chaplain to Dublin Airport, said there was a traditional crib in the airport chapel which was open to the public from 9am to 5pm daily.
