Alexy II congratulates Pope Benedict XVI on Christmas

Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia congratulated Pope Benedict XVI and other Christian hierarchs on Christmas, the great feast marked on New Style Calendar.

In his message circulated to Itar-Tass on Monday, Alexy II said, “I heartily congratulate you on the Nativity of Christ and wish you abundant grace on behalf of Infant God, well-doing, God’s help in your service.”

Catholics and Protestants celebrate Christmas on December 25 on New Style Calendar.

Most Local Orthodox Churches also celebrate Christmas on the New Style Calendar.

Following the ancient tradition of the Julian Style Calendar, the Serbian, Jerusalem and Georgian Churches celebrate Christmas jointly with the Russian Orthodox Church – January 7.
