Church Volunteers To Undergo Police Checks

Police checks will become compulsory for all parish volunteers and employees of the Catholic Church in South Australia.

Monsignor David Cappo says up to 50,000 people will be affected by the new measures, which start in June.

There will also be an education campaign on child protection.

Monsignor Cappo concedes the measures will prompt people to quit as volunteers for their parish, but says the emphasis must be on child protection.

"We will lose some people as volunteers, some people will walk away from it," he said.

"I think it's inevitable when you change a culture and a structure, but it's part of living in a society that's very accountable to an issue that's been swept under the carpet for decades."
